Clever captures (2)
In this lesson, you train yourself in looking and thinking before you play a move. Because once again, the puzzles are full of nasty pitfalls.
In every puzzle, you have to capture a piece. But be careful to have the right piece do the capturing. Before making a move, consider what your pieces are doing right now. Are they doing something important, like protecting another piece? Then, don’t use them for capturing, or you’ll throw away a piece and lose points.
Take a look at the example to see how it works.
What do you have to do?
Capture a piece but make sure not to ruin you own defense!
White can take the bishop in two ways.
The queen on e2 must continue to protect the bishop on a7.
Because if the white queen takes the black bishop (Qe3xe2), the black queen captures the white bishop (Qd7xa7).
That looks like an equal exchange, but… White is in the behind in points. Just look at the pieces on the board.
The best move for White is to capture the black bishop with the king. This way the white queen continues to protect the bishop.
